Universal Studios Inc., often referred to as
Universal Pictures, is an American production house that was established in the
year 1912 as Universal Films and Manufacturing Company. The company was
collectively founded by six people, namely, Carl Laemmle, Mark Dintenfass,
Charles O. Baumann, Adam Kessel, Pat Powers, William Swanson, David Horsley,
and Jules Brulatour. It is the oldest movie studio in the United Stated of
America and the fourth oldest worldwide.
The credit for the major blockbuster films like,
“Jaws (1975), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and Jurassic Park (1993)” goes
to Universal Pictures. All these three films were produced and directed by
Steven Spielberg and were the highest grossing films of that time.
Named among the top 6 production houses of the
world, Universal Pictures has been serving worldwide for more than 100 years
now. However, the official locations of Universal Studios are in the following
areas only; Universal Studios, Orlando, Florida; Universal Studios Hollywood,
California; Universal Studios, Japan and; Universal Studios, Singapore.
However, its headquarters are situated in Universal City, California, United
States.
Subsidiary of NBC Universal Inc., Universal Pictures
is headed by President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), Mr. Ronald Meyer.
Ronald reported an operating income of around $27 million for the year 2011.
The company is the holding company of Universal Animation Studios, Focus
Features and Illumination Entertainment.
Universal
Pictures is further divided into more precise divisions, namely, Universal
Television, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Focus Features, Working Title
Films, Illumination Entertainment and, Universal Animation Studios. Universal
Pictures are not only film producers, but a huge number of cartoons and
television shows are also the creation of Universal Pictures. The first film
that was produced under the banner of “Universal Pictures” was in the year
1914, and till now the number of films produced by this production house is
countless. Various television shows and cartoons such as Suits, Bent, Best
Friends Forever, The Mindy Project, Animal Practice and Oswald; The Little
Rabbit are all the productions of Universal Studios.
Universal Entertainment has been in the news lately
due to the resignation of CFO Sean Gamble for unspecified reasons, perhaps he
found new opportunities (as reported). Now, Rowan Conn will take over as the
new CFO of the company. Another news from Universal Studios is the release of
the trailer of its upcoming film, “Unbroken”, yet to be released.
This production house
has been giving major hits from over a century now and hence, has made
entertainment more reachable for the common people.
