‘Failure is the condiment that gives success
its flavour’ says a quote. Indeed, true when we look at the life of Steven Spielberg, the magician, who has
the power to bring the imagination live on screen. He is the storyteller who
enchants his audiences by the mystical weaves of his stories, a jeweler who
presented an array of gems for his customers and a businessman who made
entertainment industry achieve staggering heights, which only a few had dreamt
of.
One cannot help but get curious to know
how this God of cinema was born? How did he make it to the top? The story of
his yesteryears is equally enticing. Born in a Jewish family in Ohio in the
American town of Cincinnati, Steven Spielberg was an average student in terms
of academics but was always interested in the cinema. He attempted to film
making in his early teens and was awarded a prize at the age of 13 for making a
film titled, ‘Escape to Nowhere’, which was based on the battle fought in East
Africa in 1963.
Spielberg finished his graduation and was
awarded his degree, a B.A in Film Production and Electronic Arts. Prior to
this, University of Southern California awarded him an honorary degree in 1994.
Spielberg got his first break as an
unpaid intern at the Universal Studios where he made his first film named, ‘Amblin’.
When the Vice President of Universal saw his film he went on to become the
youngest director to be signed for a long term with one of the major studios of
Hollywood.
Steven
Spielberg continued to work for Universal
Studios, directing a few episodes of the shows like The Psychiatrist and Colombo
among others. Steven Spielberg’s first tryst with the Academy Awards started
with the film, ‘Jaws’ winning 3 Academy Awards
and set a domestic record for the highest box office gross.
Thereafter, he made successful films
like Poltergeist, The Goonies, ‘Catch me if you can’, ‘Jurassic park’ to the
most recent toon animation movie, ’Adventures of Tin Tin’. ’The list of Academy
Awards Steven’s Spielberg’s films have won, makes one overlook the uncounted
efforts he took in his establishing years, which went unnoticed at times and at
times did not do the trick at the box office. But this director showed he has a
lion’s heart and cannot be boggled down by the number game. He never shied away
from making a movie on the subject never tried before. He is a great
inspiration to the new generation directors like Stanley Joseph, who will have
his tryst with his audience through his movie, ‘My cornerstone’, a thrilling
story based on ‘Indian Australian’ concept.
