Film Criticism is a very important part
of the film industry, firstly, because it is a documented proof of the quality
and content of the films of the bygone era thereby providing an overview of the
society, culture and tradition and lifestyle of the people, of our
ancestors.Secondly, it also facilitates a better understanding of the impact of
the media and films in particular on the society.
The history of films comes to life with
critics reviews of the various films. Film criticism in Australia dates back to
the year 1896 with the first review of the film titled, ‘The Age’. Australia
since then has come a long way in the field of film criticism with a
combination of the young and the elderly film critics today.
Many well known film critics like Peter
Krausz, Paul Byrnes, Peter Thompson and more recently, Oliver Pfeiffer have
contributed to the movie criticism nationally and internationally. Film criticism greatly influences the
audience turnout at the box office; hence film critics have more responsibility
today towards the readers.
It is quite interesting to know that, Oliver
Pfeiffer is a graduate of North Middlesex University in North London and
trained in Film Journalism at the British Film Institute. His obsession for
films lured him to the freelancing field, with reviews and interviews being
published in, The Guardian, ScifiNow, SFX, Total Film, and Pop Matters followed
by many others.
He has not just interviewed the famous
film actors like Alex Russell, Jack Thompson,
Bruce Spence but also the film historian graham Shirley, veteran
cinematographers Don McAlpine and Ross Emery which underlines his passion for
the entire film industry.
Not surprisingly, then are his reviews
followed by the youngsters and the oldies as the reviews are without personal
favouritism towards any section of the industry. His recent review of the film
‘My Cornerstone’, describes it as an east meets west crossover film. The review also brings out the peculiarities
of the film by giving subtle insights about the making of the film and its
storyline without revealing the suspense.
Nowhere do his reviews show a personal
bias nor do they appear negative in any aspect. It comes across as a simple
review, giving the reader a fair idea of the film and yet the reader is not
influenced in any way.
Film Critics are known to be a little
kinder and sympathetic towards the local films. But with critics like Olivier
Pfeiffer we can definitely look forward to an unbiased, clear and clean review
of a film, without any lift and sympathy!!!
