Film and television critics need not
always have a mundane life surrounded by print and digital media. There can be
a very creative and challenging side to this profession. Michael Idato has proved this with the
plethora of tasks he has undertaken in his career span of around 20 years.
After his education from The Waverly
College, he began his work as a film critic for the Penthouse Magazine. Around
the same time he also grabbed the opportunity of working for The Daily
telegraph and the Sunday Telegraph in the capacity of a writer and a columnist
as well.
After gaining an experience of almost 8
years in the print media (1992 – 99), he secured his big break when he joined
The Sydney Morning Herald back in the year 2000. He has not only had a stable
innings at the Sydney Morning herald, but he has diversified his profile by
hosting a daily web show in 2005, alongside fellow critic Doug Anderson.
He has also been on the panel of jurors
of the International Emmy Awards which celebrate and honour excellence in
international television programming. Michael Idato is also one of the jurors
on the panel of the Astra Awards. The Astra awards are awarded for excellence
in cable television programming. He also appeared as a critic in an American TV
series ‘A Current Affair – Prisoners Reunion 2011’. The series was an American
television NEWS magazine started in July 1986. The episode was well received by
the audience world over. He appeared twice in the Australian television series
’20 to 1’ as critic in ‘Moment of Madness’ and ‘Moments that stopped the
Nation’.
Michael Idato has also worked for
Foxtel’s Wentworth and was recently in news for his relocation to Los Angeles.
The big shots of the print industry, including the former colleague’s of
Michael Idato, had gathered to bid him a farewell. Such is his popularity that
his rivals in the industry were also said to have been present in equal numbers
as his colleagues at this farewell event.
His long association with the Sydney Morning Herald continues as he will
continue working for them from Los Angeles.
So Michael Idato’s fans will not miss
his articles in the Sydney Herald. In fact, his fan following will only
increase worldwide, as he keeps living upto their expectations with his sharp
