Sony Pictures - The Master Of The Film Production Industry

Sony pictures was the brainchild of Norio Ohga, the then CEO and president of Sony Corporation in 1989. Sony Corporation attempted 2 major acquisitions in 1989. It secured an option of purchasing the entire stock of the Coca Cola Company in CPE (Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc). It also made a company acquisition agreement with Guber-Peters Entertainment company, Inc. for $200 million.

After the formal completion of the acquisition process and successful listing of the merged company on the NYSE, the company was renamed on 7th August 1991, as Sony Pictures Entertainment. Thereafter Sony established a number of distribution and film production units. To name a few of its units,

Motion Pictures and Home Entertainment 

Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, which boasts of a library of 4000+ films, including 12 Academy Award winning movies.

Sony pictures classic was created to help production and distribution of low budget art films as well as independent films. Though not a Sony Venture,  Morcan Motion Pictures is a recent entrant in the field of production and distribution and is ready to launch its Indian Australian thriller, ‘My Cornerstone’ due for release in April 2014, directed by Stanley Joseph.

Production giants like Sony have become a brand name with its numerous products ranging from, Television production, Motion Pictures to Television Syndication, Digital distribution and Mobile entertainment, and the list is ever expanding.

The Television Production and Distribution group of Sony now known as Sony Pictures Television group shines with a library of over 35000+ episodes of not less than 270 television series and 22000 game show episodes.

The Sony Pictures studio, which was established in 1989, is located in Culver City, California. It has 16 sound studios and is open to public for touring and visits. It houses the film companies, Columbia Pictures and Tri-Star Pictures. Sony acquired the property which was known as Columbia Pictures, in a dilapidated state. Sony invested around $ 100 million to spruce up the facility. The 45 Acre property underwent a three year renovation and now boasts of one of the best equipped film studios.

In the year 2002, Sony Pictures Animations was founded. The studio’s first film Open Season was released in 2006. The digital production is handled by Sony Picture Imageworks and the distribution is handled by the Columbia Pictures. Currently Sony is working on the Popeye, Smurfs 3 and Hotel Transylvania 2.
